Originality is overrated. Most breakthroughs I've seen were combinations of things that already existed.
In brainstorming sessions, I often see people searching for a completely new idea. That puts enormous pressure on the conversation, and rarely leads anywhere.
A much more productive question is: which two things already exist but have never met? A technique from healthcare used in logistics. A business model from software used in manufacturing.
Combining is creating too.
Seen that way, brainstorming is really just connecting too. Only with ideas instead of people.
